Course Description

This class digs deeper into oil pastel experimentation and is for those who have completed the introductory class or artists already familiar with OPs and their use. Oil pastels are a wonderfully expressive medium, often overlooked in the art world. They can be used to draw or “paint” and can be used on their own or with other art materials. They are portable, easy to set up and put away, no-odour, can be used on any surface and don’t have the dust of their “soft/dry” pastel cousins. What’s not to love?! This relaxed and informative course will cover • the unique qualities of different types and brands of oil pastels and the potential uses for each • their use on different surfaces such as paper, canvas and wood • their use with other art materials such as acrylics, gouache and inks • how to preserve oil pastel artworks using fixative / varnish / cold-wax About the Tutor: Narelle has recently returned to her art practice following many years of doing other things, including working in health and the entertainment industry. Describing herself more as a scribbler than a painter, Narelle has embraced oil pastels which, when combined with cold wax, enable layering and scraping back to create a unique finish and texture. Narelle is drawn to capturing Australian landscapes, describing the colour, light and movement of grasses, bushland and flora. Narelle has been a finalist in a number of juried exhibitions, including the Perth Royal Art Prize for Landscape in 2022 and her works are held within private and civic collections within Australia and overseas. What to Bring: PASTELS: Any oil pastels you happen to have (please note: oil pastels are NOT dry/soft pastels – these are quite different and covered in other Tresillian courses).
