About the Event
Professor Read shows how after splitting off from the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire fostered an aesthetic outlook based on Christianity. We see how Byzantine mosaicists translated the life-like third dimension of Greek and Roman statuary into continuous, interior, wall decorations of exquisite colour, light and abstract mathematical order to express the oceanic effects of Christian mysticism.
Richard Read is Emeritus Professor and Senior Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia, Perth. He is widely published and presents art lectures in an engaging and informative way for all audiences.
