About the Event

The Formation of the Seventeenth-Century Dutch Group Portrait by Rembrandt and Others

While buildings such as Amsterdam Town Hall eloquently asserted the bourgeois social order on which the Netherlands founded a Republican alternative to the absolute monarchies of other seventeenth-century countries, in this lecture Emeritus Professor Read focuses on the more intimate index of Dutch Group Portraits by Frans Halls, Thomas de Keyser, Rembrandt van Rijn and others whose evolution transforms static rows of individuals into interacting groups whose sensitivity consists in acknowledging the presence of the viewer.
