Course Description
Please bring $10 material fee in cash to pay to tutor on the day. Children will sketch and paint the most dazzling native bird, the Splendid Fairywren. Celebrate one of Western Australia’s most dazzling native birds, the Splendid Fairywren (Malurus splendens). This creative session invites young artists to explore the delicate energy and vibrant hues of this much-loved local species through expressive painting and colour exploration. Young artists will learn to observe, sketch, and paint their own fairywren using acrylics on board, focusing on proportion, gesture, and colour layering to capture its iridescent blue plumage and personality. The workshop encourages both realistic observation and imaginative expression, guiding children to connect with nature and the joy of movement through paint. Perfect for curious young creatives who love animals, nature, and the magic of art. About your tutor: Robyn Laycock (REL) is a transdisciplinary fine artist and transpersonal art therapist based at Goolugatup Heathcote in Applecross, Perth, where creativity, connection, and wellbeing meet. As Founder and Creative Director of REL Artizan Studio, she has spent over 15 years companioning people of all ages and abilities in creative inquiry through painting and mindful art-making. Robyn holds postgraduate and undergraduate degrees in Visual Arts from Edith Cowan University, an Advanced Diploma in Transpersonal Art Therapy from the Ikon Institute, and is completing a Master of Therapeutic Arts Practice at MIECAT. Her practice bridges fine art and relational art therapy, informed by neuroaesthetics, mindfulness, and a fascination with the spectra of anatomy and form. Through her teaching, she invites participants to slow down, explore process over perfection, and approach creativity as a discipline and a language of presence. She established the first painting program at the former Association for the Blind of Western Australia (now VisAbility), championing inclusive and accessible arts experiences.
