Course Description

Discover the joy of making and stitching to kick-start your own textile art practice whilst simultaneously learning about relevant contemporary artists and the influence of fibre and textiles in society. About the Course: There is a growing understanding in the value of making and stitching which, when explored in a group setting, can also enhance the sense of community and improved wellbeing. In this course, you will learn basic textile art skills required to kick-start your textile art practice. Along the way, you will be introduced to the work of contemporary fibre artists and discover the various ways in which fibre and textiles play a role in society. This course is suitable for BEGINNERS ONLY. About the Tutor: Pip is a multi-disciplinary artist who is currently focused on applying traditional techniques such as applique, embroidery and quilting to create a warm and engaging contemporary look using new, vintage and reclaimed compostable plant-based materials. Pip’s creative pursuits are underpinned by an interest in environmental wellbeing, equality, community, personal stories, colour and repetitive mark-making. Pip exhibits regularly with her most recent work showing at Holmes a Court Gallery, Lost Eden Creative, MBAS and East Gippsland Art Gallery. Pip’s work is held in private collections around the world and her studio practice is currently based at Tresillian Arts Centre. What to bring: Materials: Calico x1m (any colour of choice) Scrap fabrics (preferably cotton and/or natural fibres) Sewing thread (100% cotton; any colour of choice) Embroidery thread (100% cotton; any colour of choice) Hand sewing needles Fabric scissors Sewing pins Fabric marker (eg tailors chalk, fabric pens) Discarded notions (eg old buttons, lace, binding, etc) NOTE: Kits are available for purchase from the Tutor (see below) MATERIALS Starter Kits are available for purchase from the Tutor if needed. Each kit is valued at $110.

Terms and Conditions

A 20% administration fee applies to cancellations made before the beginning of the term. No refund will be given once the term has started. Participants in the term courses must be 18+ unless attending the After School or School Holiday workshops. Classes are not held on public holidays. Course start and finishing dates may vary due to public holidays and the availability of the course tutor. A full refund will only be given if a course is cancelled by the Tresillian Arts Centre. A refund will only be given if you have a medical certificate for the dates you have missed. No pro-rata payments are available for term courses or if classes are unattended by the student.
