Course Description
Creative Embroidery develops hand embroidery skills through guided, self selected projects. If you have work in progress that needs some attention, or maybe you just want to learn about the ancient craft of embroidery. This course will provide a wide range of techniques. About Tutor: Barbara Trendall My professional background is in medical science, working in forensic science and histology in South Africa and Australia. Alongside this career, I have stitched since childhood and developed a long standing passion for embroidery. My practice includes thread painting, stumpwork and goldwork, with techniques ranging from modern to Elizabethan, supported by training through the Royal School of Needlework (RSN) at Hampton Court Palace. I am an active member of the Claremont Stitching Group and the Embroidery Guild of Western Australia, where I also teach. I have completed numerous masterclasses with leading embroidery practitioners, including Maree Talbot, Tanya Cohen, Alison Cole and Helen Richmond. My most recent project, “Opus Anglicanum (Violet),” was completed at the RSN, renowned for its role in producing embroidery for King Charles’ coronation. About the course This course introduces students to colourful, creative embroidery through a wide range of techniques, including surface stitchery, 3D stitching, stumpwork, goldwork and basic beading. Students may begin with a simple introductory project or continue their own work, drawing on Barbara’s guidance and extensive resources. Skills covered include selecting suitable fabrics and threads, preparing and setting up projects, applying appropriate finishing techniques, and developing confidence in colour choices and design. Students should have traditional embroidery experience and be able to work independently. What to Bring: Bring your own project to continue working on with guidance by Barbara, or try a project your tutor provides - any kits or resources brought in by tutor will be paid for directly to the tutor. You should bring a general sewing kit i.e. needles, scissors, thimble etc, also a light and/or magnifier if you normally use these items to assist with your creative pursuits.
