T2 Oils – Techniques of the Masters

Course Description

In this oil painting course, you will progress from the classic grisaille underpainting to more advanced techniques of the Northern European Masters. Learn to work with a more complex colour palette while you develop paintings with depth. About your Tutor: John Paul has been a professional practicing artist since 1974 and has over 10 years of experience teaching art. John’s work is in the Lawrence Wilson Gallery, UWA; Notre Dame University; Edith Cowan University: Curtin University; New Norcia Gallery; Royal Perth and St John of God Collections and the Kerry Stokes Collection. John won the Mandorla Art Award in 1990 and in 2012. He has recently returned to Perth after living in Darwin. About the Course: In this oil painting course, you will extend the basic knowledge you have of oils as you learn the techniques of the Northern Renaissance masters like Ingres, Bosch and Bruegel, including how to create a grisaille underpainting. WHAT STUDENTS NEED TO BRING MATERIAL LIST • Packet of wet wipes • Notebook and pencil • 2–3 canvas boards, approximately A4 size • White or green chalk, or a light coloured soft pastel or pastel pencil (used for tracing the image onto the board) • Paintbrushes – a set of synthetic brushes, sizes 1 to 12 (inexpensive varieties are suitable and can be found at Bunnings or discount stores) • Palette knife • 1–2 large white palettes or a large palette pad (for easy clean up) • Rags and paper towels for cleaning brushes • Cotton rags • 2 small jars with lids for mixing medium • 2 large jars with lids for cleaning brushes and taking home • Small bottle of baby oil and soap for cleaning hands • Odourless turpentine • Fixative Home use only: • Mineral turpentine for cleaning brushes (please do not bring to class due to odour) Oil Paints – Art Spectrum Colours Colours to start with: • Phthalo Blue • Ultramarine Blue • Alizarin Crimson • Naphthol Red • Burnt Sienna • Yellow Ochre • Naphthol Yellow • Viridian Green • Titanium White • Lamp Black Mediums & Solvents: • Non toxic odourless solvent (Art Spectrum) • Linseed oil Note: If you have difficulty finding any of the Naphthol colours, the nearest equivalent colour is perfectly acceptable.

Terms and Conditions

A 20% administration fee applies to cancellations made before the beginning of the term. No refund will be given once the term has started. Participants in the term courses must be 18+ unless attending the After School or School Holiday workshops. Classes are not held on public holidays. Course start and finishing dates may vary due to public holidays and the availability of the course tutor. A full refund will only be given if a course is cancelled by the Tresillian Arts Centre. A refund will only be given if you have a medical certificate for the dates you have missed. No pro-rata payments are available for term courses or if classes are unattended by the student.
