Course Description
The ‘Life Drawing Skills’ course is designed as an introduction to life drawing suitable for beginners who are just starting out, through to experienced artists who want to hone their observational skills. Each week Jane will guide students through different practical exercises such as - sight size measuring; using negative space; contour drawing and reductive drawing, amongst many others. We will explore different tools and materials such as charcoal, pastel and graphite and a variety of pose times with short warm up poses up and a long pose session all with a live model. And, we will discuss different contemporary artists who incorporate life drawing as part of their art practice. All skill levels are welcome. About your Tutor: Jane Barwell studied Sculpture at Curtin University and after completing a Post Graduate Diploma in Visual Arts at Sydney College of the Arts Jane received an Australia Council Studio in London and travelled to the UK. While there Jane studied Theatre Design and worked for many years for English National Opera as a Scenic Artist. Jane has taught at WAPAA, ECU and Fremantle Arts Centre. More recently Jane has been an arts worker at DADAA working in the areas of visual arts, dance and drama. Jane’s art practice currently centres around drawing and she recently exhibited a body of this work at EarlyWork gallery in Fremantle. What you need to bring: Material list. Paper – For the first class please bring - butchers paper, large. For successive classes please discuss with me first and then source - A3 cartridge paper, A3 copy bond, toned paper such as grey, craft or brown paper. Drawing media - For the first class please bring – willow charcoal. For successive classes please discuss with me and source - a variety of media such as compressed charcoal (very soft), soft graphite pencil or stick in 4B or 6B, charcoal pencil (soft), white pastel or chalk, black ink. Bulldog clips x 2 to fit a large drawing board- for every class Erasers – a plastic and a kneadable eraser – for every class Drop sheet or old single bedsheet to use a drop sheet for flooring protection. Terms and Conditions
A 20% administration fee applies to cancellations made before the beginning of the term. No refund will be given once the term has started. Participants in the term courses must be 18+ unless attending the After School or School Holiday workshops. Classes are not held on public holidays. Course start and finishing dates may vary due to public holidays and the availability of the course tutor. A full refund will only be given if a course is cancelled by the Tresillian Arts Centre. A refund will only be given if you have a medical certificate for the dates you have missed. No pro-rata payments are available for term courses or if classes are unattended by the student.
