T4 Explore Encaustic & Plaster Painting

Course Description

In this course you will learn how to use both hot encaustic wax and plaster carving to create layered artwork compositions with a variety of mediums and processes. Encaustic wax painting can be dated back to Ancient Greece and Egypt. Also known as hot wax painting, it is a spontaneous medium where wax is applied to wood panels. Use Mixed media paints, inks, plaster, glues and paper to create a layered effect with hot wax. We will be melting hot bees wax mixed with Damar resin to achieve interesting effects. You will also learn how to prepare a wooden panel with a mixture of plaster and other materials. Bring along some inspiration images if you would like to transfer these into an artwork, or work with the tutor’s source images. About the tutor: Val has been carrying out a professional art practice since graduating from Curtin University in 2002 with a Fine Arts degree.   She has attended numerous workshops on printmaking, painting, new applications of mediums, always challenging and extending her artistic abilities.  Val worked towards the City of South Perth Art Awards (Acquisitive) the year following her graduation and won the award.  That spurred her on to her first solo Exhibition in 2004.   She had twenty-five pieces on show, both large and small and sold fifteen.  Thirty percent of sales proceeds went to Princess Margaret Hospital. Since then, Val has had many commissions, entered more than twenty group exhibitions, won two art prizes (city of South Perth and Town of Cambridge); had three solo exhibitions; had her own booth within a large exhibition twice; and has had two joint overseas exhibitions with a Canadian Artist.  Her work is in public collections of the City of South Perth, Town of Cambridge, Trinity College and Princess Margaret Hospital. Materials: Paint brushes – small, medium, round and flat Acrylic paint – paynes grey, grey yellow, titanium white, cadmium yellow deep, ultramarine blue, phthalo turquoise, yellow ochre, raw sienna, raw umber, cadmium red and any other colours that you would like to use. Photocopied images you may like to apply to your artwork Small scissors, collage materials, dried leaves, newspaper prints Jar with lid for washing brushes.
