Course Description

Explore abstract painting using acrylic paint and various tools and techniques. You will embrace ‘the gentle art of play’ when looking to find creative solutions to artistic ‘glitches and hitches’. All levels welcome About the Tutor: Ric is an ex-graphic designer, ex-VET trainer, and practising full-time artist. Primarily a painter, Ric works in a variety of styles and mediums from his studio in Stoneville. His current body of work explores the potential for non-representational abstraction – using colour, line, shape, texture, and so on – to make emotional connections with the viewer. He also enjoys painting landscapes and figures, in both oils and acrylics, as expressions of less ambiguous notions and themes. Ric has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Curtin University (1992). Course Description: This course invites students to explore process-driven abstract painting using acrylic paint and a range of tools and techniques. Participants will learn to utilise the basic elements and principles of art/design to develop paintings that are exciting, engaging, and informed. They will embrace ‘the gentle art of play’ when looking to find creative solutions to artistic ‘glitches and hitches’ (problems they are encouraged to create for themselves!) and learn to build paintings layer by layer as they break old habits and discover new ones. Students are encouraged to come along armed with an infallible sense of ‘derring-do’. What to Bring: A couple of stretched and primed canvases (not too small; medium or larger to start), an A3 acrylic painting paper pad, a range of acrylic paints (not too many; mainly the primaries), paintbrushes, jars, aprons, mark-making tools such as scrapers, rollers, palette knives, a notebook and writing/drawing pens and pencils, soft charcoal, paper plates for palettes. Fashion magazines, scissors and a glue stick will also be helpful for some exercises in the class.
