T2 Hand Building with Clay

Course Description

Learn how to make a range of functional clay objects and fun clay characters. We will be using porcelain paper clay and learning a number of different hand-building techniques over the course. You will also learn how to glaze and the final works will be fired so you can take home to use. This clay course is designed to give students a range of clay experiences and learn a number of different techniques over the term. Including hand building clay animals/critters, pinch pot planter, slab built mugs, glazing and decorating techniques. Finished work will be fired for you to take home and use. Please note fired works take up to 4 weeks after the end of term to be ready for collection. Students will be notified when the work is ready. About your Tutor: Western Australian ceramic artist, Melanie Sharpham is connected to and inspired by Australia’s natural landscapes. Though her creative business, Eucalypt Homewares (established 2007), she creates decorative and functional handmade slip cast ceramics. She has designed and created a range of Australian botanical tissue transfers for her signature collection, Floralware. Eucalypt Homewares tableware can be found across Australian boutique stores and high end restaurants, including Wildflower, Perth. Melanie has over 25 years of ceramic experience, working and teaching in her pottery studio. A degree in Primary Education and Early Childhood teaching and an Advanced Diploma in Studio Ceramics, Melanie has facilitated primary school artist in residence projects, run PD for teachers and taught students of all ages from Pre - school through to seniors. What to bring: Please wear old clothes/apron Old towel Personal clay tools – optional Mud kidney – yellow (any size) Journal and pencil A $40 material fee, payable to the tutor at the first class. Includes 1 bag of porcelain paper clay, fair use of colourants and glazes. Tools and equipment are supplied but students are encouraged to purchase their own small set of clay tools to bring each week. Students will have the option of purchasing tutor's tissue transfers to use in class. This and other extra materials and fees discussed in class. The cost of firing is included in the course fees. All works fired on-site must be produced in your Tresillian class, from clay supplied by or approved by your tutor. Size limit of 30cm for all fired works.

Terms and Conditions

A 20% administration fee applies to cancellations made before the beginning of the term. No refund will be given once the term has started. Participants in the term courses must be 18+ unless attending the After School or School Holiday workshops. Classes are not held on public holidays. Course start and finishing dates may vary due to public holidays and the availability of the course tutor. A full refund will only be given if a course is cancelled by the Tresillian Arts Centre. A refund will only be given if you have a medical certificate for the dates you have missed. No pro-rata payments are available for term courses or if classes are unattended by the student.
