Course Description
Discover the joy of making and stitching to kick-start your own fibre art practice whilst simultaneously learning about the role textiles have played in society and the work of contemporary fibre artists. About the Course: In today’s world, there is a growing understanding in the value of making, stitching, repairing, reusing and reimagining which, when explored in a group setting, can also enhance the sense of community and improved wellbeing. This grassroots activity is playing out within the art world as collectors search for the “next big thing” which is leading to a revival of interest in textile and fibre art as evidenced by the prominence of textiles artists receiving major art awards in Australia. In this course, you will merge the two ends of the spectrum. First, you will learn how to apply basic techniques to pre-loved textiles to kick-start your own fibre art practice. Along the way, you will discover the role textiles play in society and be introduced to the work of contemporary fibre artists. This course is ideal for beginner to intermediate level. No sewing experience is required. About the Tutor: Pip is a multi-disciplinary artist who is currently focused on applying traditional techniques such as applique, embroidery and quilting to create a warm and engaging contemporary look using new, vintage and reclaimed compostable plant-based materials. Pip’s creative pursuits are underpinned by an interest in environmental wellbeing, equality, community, personal stories, colour and repetitive mark-making. Pip has exhibited regularly with her most recent work showing at the Holmes a Court Gallery as part of the WAFTA twentyFIVE+ exhibition. Pip’s work is held in private collections around the world and her studio practice is currently based at Tresillian Arts Centre. What to bring: Calico x2m (any colour of choice) Scrap fabrics (preferably cotton and/or plant-based) Sewing thread (100% cotton; any colour of choice) Embroidery thread (100% cotton; any colour of choice) Hand sewing needles Fabric scissors Sewing pins Fabric marker (eg tailors chalk, fabric pens) Discarded notions (eg old buttons, lace, binding, zips) Other small items of interest (eg badges, bread tags, straws, wire) NOTE: If you prefer not to bring your own materials, kits are available for purchase from the Tutor, including all of the above, for a fee of $100. Terms and Conditions
A 20% administration fee applies to cancellations made before the beginning of the term. No refund will be given once the term has started. Participants in the term courses must be 18+ unless attending the After School or School Holiday workshops. Classes are not held on public holidays. Course start and finishing dates may vary due to public holidays and the availability of the course tutor. A full refund will only be given if a course is cancelled by the Tresillian Arts Centre. A refund will only be given if you have a medical certificate for the dates you have missed. No pro-rata payments are available for term courses or if classes are unattended by the student.
